    Unbelievable photos inform the story of the world’s most prized marble

    On the foot of putting marble quarries in central Italy’s Apuan Alps sits the village of Colonnata (pictured above) – a quaint place famed for its pork lard and quarry staff. The stone extracted from outdoors the close by metropolis of Carrara, together with from the white marble quarry within the picture under, is extensively thought to be the purest and most dear on the planet.

    “Since the time of the Roman Empire, the marble was considered the best in the world,” says photographer Alessandro Gandolfi, who documented the story of the extremely sought-after materials in his challenge Land of Marble. “The best sculptors in the world, like Michelangelo, came personally to choose these marbles for their sculptures.”

    A number of centuries after the Italian Renaissance, marble stays a staple materials for artists. Within the picture aboove, college students at Carrara’s Academy of Tremendous Arts first hone their sculpting abilities on clay.

    Past its use in artwork, Carrara’s marble is commonly pulverised and used as calcium carbonate to make merchandise equivalent to paper, paint, fertiliser and toothpaste.

    However the extraction of marble isn’t with out affect on the atmosphere. “We are extracting a little bit too much marble today,” says Gandolfi. “If we keep going at this rate, you will see the mountains totally destroyed in 500 years’ time.”
