On a month-to-month foundation, retail gross sales had been “virtually unchanged” from March to April (seasonally adjusted), and gross sales had been up 3.0 % from April 2023.
From the Census Bureau report:
Advance estimates of U.S. retail and meals providers gross sales for Could 2024, adjusted for seasonal variation and vacation and trading-day variations, however not for value adjustments, had been $703.1 billion, up 0.1 % from the earlier month, and up 2.3 % above Could 2023. … The March 2024 to April 2024 % change was revised from just about unchanged to down 0.2 %.

The second graph reveals the year-over-year change in retail gross sales and meals service (ex-gasoline) since 1993.
Retail and Meals service gross sales, ex-gasoline, elevated by 2.6% on a YoY foundation.
The change in gross sales in Could was beneath expectations, and gross sales in March and April had been revised down.
