Bottlenose dolphins make an open-mouthed expression that resembles a smile

Dolphins appear to make open-mouthed facial expressions most frequently whereas they’re seen to a playmate, suggesting such shows could also be much like human smiles.

She says the research can’t say conclusively whether or not it’s comparable with smiling in people. “We do not claim to clarify dolphin communication strategies during play with a single piece of research. However, we hope to open a new line of research in which the visual component is also taken into consideration.”
Luciana Moller at Flinders College in Adelaide, Australia, says open-mouthed behaviour in dolphins happens in a variety of contexts, together with aggressive, sexual and social interactions. This implies it’s a very versatile sign, so can’t essentially be interpreted as a smile.
