Retail Gross sales Elevated 0.1% in August

On a month-to-month foundation, retail gross sales elevated 0.1% from July to August (seasonally adjusted), and gross sales have been up 2.1 % from August 2023.

From the Census Bureau report:

Advance estimates of U.S. retail and meals companies gross sales for August 2024, adjusted for seasonal variation and vacation and trading-day variations, however not for worth modifications, have been $710.8 billion, a rise of 0.1 % from the earlier month, and up 2.1 % from August 2023. … The June 2024 to July 2024 % change was revised from up 1.0 % to up 1.1 %.

Retail gross sales ex-gasoline was up 0.1% in August.

The second graph reveals the year-over-year change in retail gross sales and meals service (ex-gasoline) since 1993.

The change in gross sales in August was barely beneath expectations, nevertheless gross sales in June and July have been revised up, mixed.
